Wohooo – today is a special day! June 14th 2018: I am proudly celebrating 100 days on the road. Time to review what travelling by myself taught me so far.
Travelling with your family, friends or people you know well or love is an amazing experience. You create moments that you will cherish for the rest of your life. But still, there is something very special in the experience of travelling by yourself.
South from chaotic and fascinating Naples, the vertiginous and craggy Amalfi Coast with its three islands Capri, Ischia and Procida has been a magnet for visitors since Roman times.
The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s most memorable and beautiful destinations. Mountains plunge into the sea in a vertical scene of precipitous crags, cliff-clinging abodes and verdant woodland.
With its picturesque towns nestling on steep cliffs, the coast of Amalfi this 40 kilometer long strip along the Italian coast is simply stunning and very different from what I have seen so far on my trip through Europe.
Tuscany is a very famous region in central Italy with an area of about 23,000 square kilometers and a population of about 3.8 million inhabitants. This area offers the perfect mix of relaxation and sightseeing for campers. If you are planning a holiday with your home on wheels in this region, here is a little inspiration for you.
Never heard of awns and how they can be dangerous for your dog?!
Well, I can now tell you all about it. We are in Tuscany, Italy right now and apparently May is the high season for awns here, so I would like to warn all dog owners who are currently in the area.
After a wonderful time in Greece, Fiete and I took the ferry from Igoumenitsa to Bari in Italy. What an adventure! I was super nervous to get the motorhome on to the ferry, as I have heard nightmare stories about it from other campers. Ferries leaving hours late, unfriendly staff guiding vehicles in a rush, cramped spaces and excellent driving and parking skills needed.

Greece – I love you! You have been wonderful to Fiete and me. We will come back – promised!
Fiete and I have been spending almost two months in Greece from March through April 2018. We started coming from Tirana in Albania over to Thessaloniki, Macedonia and Chalkidiki. From there we looped back to Thessaloniki to go further South along the coast visiting the Pélion and Athens. From there we took the route through Peleponnese over to Delphi and Meteora until we finished off in Igoumenitsa to take the ferry to Bari in Italy.
When you think of Greece the first thing that comes to mind are the beautiful turquoise beaches, fishing boats and tzatziki.
But there is a lot more to this fragmented country. In the center of its mountainous region, near the Pindus valley, lays a small area with fascinating and oddly-shaped rock formations and monestaries built in and on top of cliffs. Meteora.
Delphi was one of my top ancient attractions in Greece – very unique and majestic. A two hours drive from Athens and right around the corner of Meteora.
It is located between the rugged peak of Mount Parnassus and a spectacular valley of cypress and olive trees and is regarded by ancient Greeks as the most sacred site in the world. So of course I had to go and visit.
This is also the place where I decided that it’s time for a new start, which you can read all about in my other blog post. So yes, this place is very special.
Today is our last day in Greece because we are taking the ferry from Igoumenitsa to Bari in Italy for more camping adventures on the other side of the Adriatic Sea. As Fiete and I were in this beautiful country for a couple of weeks in March and April 2018, we not only met wonderful people but also checked out a couple of campsites along our route. In case you are planning this or a similar itinerary, these are our top spots to stay and why.
As you might know by now, I am sooo German – such a planner, organizer and change avoider. But being two months on the road now, and six weeks in Greece, I have to admit that a tiny part of my personal culture changed. I knew this would happen.
I got more relaxed and I started to realize that plans have to change if you want to make the best out of your travel adventure. And find your Happy Places…
