As you can see on my live map, I have been travelling from Germany, Austria, Czech Republic to Slovenia and Croatia on my way to Greece.
There is a vignette system in Slovenia if you are using the highways, which I am happy to share with you in case you are planning your next travel to this pretty country.
Where do you have to pay?
In recent years, the road network of Slovenia has been expanded so that today the country has a modern infrastructure. The capital Ljubljana and the northeastern city of Maribor are well connected and form the junctions of the highway system. In order to refinance the costs of the infrastructure development, Slovenia has introduced tolls by vignette through the DARS motorway company.
Basically, whenever you travel by car or caravan to a motorway (A) or expressway (H), you must pay the toll as a lump sum via a vignette. You can speak of a pure highway toll in Slovenia, because rural and municipal roads are at no charge. However, these are not always in good condition and I don’t recommend taking them travelling with a motorhome.
One of the main connections between Austria and Slovenia is the Caravanning Tunnel. For passing the nearly eight kilometer long tunnel, you will have to pay an additional 7.20 Euros special toll per trip. Before you drive in the direction of Slovenia, you should already have the toll sticker on the windshield.
The Vignette in Slovenia
If you are traveling by car, you should only use the highway with a vignette which must be glued to the windshield. The prescribed place is at the top left corner of the windshield.

If you want to pay the vignette, you have plenty of options. It is offered at border crossings, post offices, kiosks, automobile clubs or even on the internet. If you are passing a toll booth, you ideally use the left lane as the right lane is usually reserved for vehicles over 3.5 tons gross vehicle weight. So pay attention to the signage.
The price for the vignette depends on the car class. Motorcycles are 1, 2A vehicles up to 3.5 tons gross vehicle weight and 2B is for vehicles above 3.5 tons of gross vehicle weight.
For motorhomes up to 3.5 tons, you have to pay 15 Euros for a week, 30 Euros for a month or 110 Euros for a year. For vehicles over 3.5 tons a different rule than the vignette applies. Instead of a lump sum, this must be paid depending on the route travelled. This can be done in cash or by credit card at the toll station or by electronic transponder.
Make sure to always carry the receipt of the vignette purchase with you during your trip. In Slovenia, the police often checks whether the fee has been paid and sometimes doesn’t accept the vignette as proof.
